What is Topkapı Palace?
Topkapı Palace (Topkapı Sarayı) is a 15th-century Ottoman imperial palace in Sultanahmet, Istanbul. It served as the main residence and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman sultans from 1465 to 1856 and has operated as a museum since 3 April 1924.
How long do you need to visit Topkapı Palace?
Plan on two to three hours for the main palace and courtyards, and add roughly 45 minutes if you also visit the Harem. Serious history enthusiasts and photographers routinely spend a half-day on site, especially in spring and autumn when the gardens are open.
Is the Harem included in the standard Topkapı ticket?
No. The Harem requires a separate paid ticket at the entrance inside the Second Courtyard. It is administered as a distinct section of the museum and, on busy days, sells out for the day by early afternoon.
What is the nearest tram stop to Topkapı Palace?
The nearest stop is Sultanahmet on the T1 tram line, about a seven-minute walk uphill through Gülhane Park or past Hagia Sophia. Gülhane station on the same line is a slightly gentler approach through the outer palace gardens.
